THE CHALLENGE
When an international mining contractor secured a brownfield, critical minerals nickel mining project in Northern Ontario, timelines were already tight. As this marked their first Canadian mining operation, early production milestones were critical.
The project required a 300-ton class primary loading excavator to be delivered, assembled, and fully operational within six weeks of contract signing. With a remote site location and the scale of equipment required, meeting this timeline presented a significant logistical and operational challenge.
THE SOLUTION
Wajax accepted the challenge and worked closely with the contractor to understand both the urgency of the project and the conditions on site. Given the expedited timeline, execution had to be precise and coordinated at every stage.
A Hitachi EX2600-7BE mining excavator was selected for the project and mobilized from Wajax’s mining headquarters in Acheson, Alberta. From there, a detailed logistics and build plan was developed to ensure the equipment could be delivered and commissioned without delay.
Nine tractor trailers were deployed to transport the excavator components more than 3,000 kilometres to the Northern Ontario site. Upon arrival, Wajax’s national mining build team took over, completing the full assembly and commissioning of the machine on site.
THE IMPACT
Throughout the process, the Wajax team maintained a strong focus on safety and build quality, ensuring the machine would be ready for immediate operation upon completion.
Despite the compressed timeline and remote location, the excavator was delivered, assembled, and commissioned within the six-week window. The contractor was able to begin primary loading operations as planned, supporting the successful launch of their first Canadian mining project.
Following commissioning, Wajax continues to provide full service and support for the Hitachi | LANDCROS excavator, including the MTU engine and Bradken ground engaging tools that power it.
As new mining projects continue to move forward across Canada, timelines are tightening and execution is becoming increasingly important. This project reflects Wajax’s ability to support that momentum, bringing together equipment availability, coordinated logistics, and technical expertise to deliver complex mining solutions when it matters most.
