Monjed 2 Fireboat wins WorkBoat Magazine’s Significant Boat of the Year Award

Wajax key partner in engine design, proud to see this win for Metalcraft and other partners

Toronto, Ontario (February 6, 2023) – The Monjed 2 Fireboat has officially won WorkBoat Magazine’s Significant Boat of the Year award, which was announced at the International WorkBoat Show. As a key partner in the construction of the Monjed 2’s engine, Wajax is excited to see this boat receive this prestigious award.

The Monjed 2, crafted by Metalcraft Marine Inc., is a 25-meter fire, rescue and patrol boat created for the Kuwait Fire Service using MTU propulsion. This catamaran fireboat runs on a total vessel propulsion power of 2760hp and utilizes two engine-driven fire pumps with 10,000 gallon-per-minute pumping power to efficiently fight fires.

Wajax provided a plethora of parts in the building process of the Monjed 2, including:

·      MTU 10V2000M86 main engines rated at 1380hp each
·      MTU Bluevision Next Generation control system
·      ZF 665TS 2 speed marine gears
·      Vulkan shafting solution between the engines and the fire pumps

Through this equipment, sourced through top-quality vendors, Wajax played an integral part in creating the powerful, efficient engines the Monjed 2 needs to help the Kuwait Fire Service do their jobs with both speed and safety.

“We’re incredibly proud to be one of the teams involved in creating the Monjed 2, and we’re glad to see it get the recognition it deserves” says Joe Di Pede, Vice President of Powertrain at Wajax. “The quality of vendors and parts we bring to these kinds of projects is what gives us some much confidence in our work, and it shows in the performance of the Monjed 2’s engines. We appreciate the opportunity from Metalcraft to work with them on this amazing vessel, and we thank Workboat Magazine for showing off the Monjed 2 and its capabilities.”

The Monjed 2 Fireboat has been registered in Kuwait, and Wajax is proud to know it will be in use fighting fires and saving lives with the Kuwait Fire Service.

Wajax Corporation

Founded in 1858, Wajax (TSX: WJX) is one of Canada’s longest standing and most diversified industrial products and services providers. The Corporation operates an integrated distribution system providing sales, parts, and services to a broad range of customers in diverse sectors of the Canadian economy, including construction, forestry, mining, industrial and commercial, oil sands, transportation, metal processing, government and utilities, and oil and gas. Details regarding Wajax’s products and services can be found on its website: d3mm1hwtmc2dpa.cloudfront.net.

The Corporation’s goal is to be Canada’s leading industrial products and services provider, distinguished through its three core capabilities: sales force excellence, the breadth and efficiency of repair and maintenance operations, and the ability to work closely with existing and new vendor partners to continually expand its product offering to customers. The Corporation believes that achieving excellence in these three areas will position it to create value for its customers, employees, vendors, and shareholders.

Digging In: 27 Years and Counting

Growing up as a child in Blairgowrie, Scotland, David Stalker was introduced to excavators at a young age. With an uncle who worked as a machine operator and a father who started his own excavator hire company, it was only a matter of time before Stalker experienced what it took, firsthand, to excel in the construction industry.

Stalker’s excitement for the industry followed him more than 4,000 miles from Scotland to Vancouver Island where he immigrated with his parents and siblings in 1988. And after a few years of working for a few different contractors, he and his wife decided it was time to start their own business, renting their first machine and officially starting David Stalker Excavating Ltd. in Ladysmith, British Columbia.

Initially, Stalker, who recently celebrated the 25-year-anniversary of David Stalker Excavating, didn’t think much about the longevity of his business.

“I never knew how many years we’d be in business,” he said. “I didn’t look at that at the time. I just looked at buying a machine and trying to get myself a job. That was 1993, and thankfully, we’re still at it 27 years later.”

Proven quality, proven results

Stalker purchased his first Hitachi, a ZX200LC-3, in 2009. The machine had more than 9,000 hours on it when he sold it in 2017. It’s been more than 10 years since this first purchase, but Stalker continues turning to Hitachi to get the job done right.

“Hitachi is a great machine,” Stalker said. “Their reliability, fuel economy and resale value – we love them. I think with the Hitachi name, you get proven quality.”

The newest addition to Stalker’s fleet is a ZX345USLC-6 – the first of its kind to arrive on Vancouver Island. The machine is currently working on a road construction project to provide public access to a marina and mill site in Ladysmith.

“Ever since I knew the 345 was coming out, I wanted one,” Stalker said. “I realized that the 345 would actually work in the same place that a conventional 250-size machine would work. After discussing it with Wajax, we decided to take the plunge.”

As a company that specializes in residential and municipal excavation work, David Stalker Excavating often works on road projects where traffic flow must be maintained. With its reduced-tail-swing design, the 345 brings efficiency to those projects by allowing for a single lane of traffic.

“With a conventional excavator, it’s quite hard to maintain single lane traffic,” Stalker said. “With the reduced-tail-swing of the 345, you’ve got no worries. It works very well for that application. Our operators love them.”

In addition to the ZX345USLC-6, Stalker’s fleet consists of five more reduced-tail-swing models and a ZX50U-5 compact excavator – all of which he purchased through Wajax, Canada’s exclusive Hitachi construction dealer. And while his fondness for Hitachi continues to grow, so does his relationship with Wajax.

“We started with Wajax in 2009 and we’ve had a very good relationship with them ever since,” Stalker said. “I don’t think we’ve ever had to question a bill or had any type of heated discussion with them. Wajax has always been straight upfront with us. We’ve never had an issue.”

Still going strong

It’s this partnership that allows Stalker to travel back to Scotland at least once a year, as he knows that if something happens with a machine, Wajax has him – and his company – covered. Most recently, Stalker traveled home to celebrate the 97th birthday of his grandmother, fondly known as Granny.

“My granny…she’s a tough one,” he said. “She’s big, strong and just doesn’t know when to quit. She’s got her own place, fixes her own meals, does her own laundry. She just keeps going. I admire her a lot.”

And although Stalker moved away from Granny more than 30 years ago, he’s still got her to thank when it comes to his daily mentality at work.

“Granny makes you look at things a lot differently – with having a business, employees, issues and everything else,” he said. “Here she is, 97 and still going. She just makes you look at things in a whole different perspective.”

While Stalker’s perspective may have been unsure about the longevity of David Stalker Excavating at the start, it’s clear that he has paved the way for even more success. As someone who would rather be on a jobsite than in the office, Stalker knows there’s nothing else he’d rather do. And with 27 years under his belt at the company, he’s excited for what’s to come

“I’ve always enjoyed this type of work,” Stalker said. “I can’t imagine myself doing anything else. I can’t wait to get up in the morning and go to work. It’s in my blood and it’s what I want to keep doing.”

How hard work and an entrepreneurial spirit forged the next generation of Kang Construction

Ferlin Kang didn’t always know he wanted to go into the construction industry. Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, he was exposed to the energy and opportunity that comes with living in a growing, evolving city. Ferlin knew he could pursue different paths in life, but he also knew how unique it was to have the opportunity to carry on his father’s business as a first-generation Canadian.

“My father had humble beginnings, immigrating from Asia. He had been in construction since the 1960s before starting Kang Construction Ltd. in 1982 in Calgary,” Ferlin said. “When I was in my teen years, I started working with the company and thought there was no way I’d be doing this.”

But for Ferlin, the opportunity to carry on the family business was something he grew interested in, and soon began to enjoy.

“My father came here, established himself, started a business and became an entrepreneur. Being able to grow the business to this point is not something to take lightly,” Ferlin said. “I didn’t want that legacy to go away.”

And that legacy will remain intact. Ferlin is now the vice president of the 60-employee Kang Construction, as his father, Alvin, gradually steps back.

Forged from orange

Initially, Kang Construction began carving out a niche in the petroleum industry. Due to an industry need for excavation, Kang Construction purchased its first excavator in early 1988: a Hitachi EX200LC. It was the first excavator of its kind to operate in Alberta.

“For us, the Hitachi brand loyalty reaches all the way back to our beginnings as a company when we first purchased our EX200,” Ferlin said. “Hitachi’s always been known for manufacturing heavy equipment that is tried, tested and true. They’re very reputable and providing the right equipment for the right job is always very important to us.”

The EX200 wasn’t the only “first” for this company. In December 2018, Kang Construction was also the first company in Alberta to purchase the ZX345USLC-6.

“Our fleet of Hitachi excavators ranges from a 470, which is our largest, to the 225, 160, 135, 85, all the way down to the minis. We also have a 350 that has a long-reach telescopic boom mounted to it for deep excavations, or we can change it to a 60-feet-long-reach boom,” Ferlin said. “Just from our fleet, you can see the versatility that Hitachi equipment provides.”

While Kang Construction began with a niche in the petroleum industry, they have since grown drastically. Their growing fleet is a result of growing services.

“We started to go more into the earthwork side of things and away from the petroleum side toward the 2000s,” Ferlin said. “We got into more detail and mass excavations for commercial, retail and industrial projects.”

Bringing an edge to the fleet

Soon, Kang Construction expanded to offer installation of water and sewer underground utilities to their projects. This is where the 345’s versatility really shined.

“With the inner-city job sites, we deal with some tighter areas,” Ferlin said. “Accessibility of the 345 is definitely a positive.”

As it has grown, Kang Construction has tackled larger, high-profile jobs within the area. Recently, the company has been working at the Foothills Hospital Calgary Cancer Centre connector, providing earthworks, and water and sewer utilities to the project.

The 345 worked out really well for this project in the sense that we have a new Tier 4 engine in there, which just gives minimal emissions,” Ferlin said. “A new machine like the 345 is perfect when working near a sensitive hospital environment.

Another advantage of the 345 is the power it brings to tight spaces as a reduced-tail-swing model.

The fact that it’s a reduced-tail-swing and has power, that’s just an added bonus,” Ferlin said. “It’s perfect for our fleet.

Productivity is the name of the game

If Ferlin had to choose one word that is most important to Kang Construction, it would be “productivity.” As technology advances and the needs of their clients become more stringent, he has to rely on equipment that can deliver.

“If equipment works efficiently and safely, that’s paramount,” Ferlin said. “Breakdowns or reliability issues are critical in our business. I find that for us, Hitachi works.”

For their Hitachi equipment needs, Kang Construction turns to Wajax, one of Canada’s longest standing and most diversified industrial products and services providers.

Our dealer support from Wajax has been fantastic. We’re able to get anything we need from them quickly to keep us up and running,” Ferlin said.

Along with contributing to the bottom line, Hitachi excavators are a favorite among Kang Construction operators, too.

“Getting a new piece of equipment is always like Christmas to everybody,” Ferlin said. “They love the 345. They find that being inside the machine, it’s quite roomy. They’re not crunched like they are in some other machines.”

The future of Kang

Ferlin has hopes that the company will continue to grow in Calgary, a city which he describes as “opportunistic.” And he is grateful for the growth Kang Construction has seen thus far.

“We’ve always been aggressive, ever since our small beginnings. But I couldn’t have envisioned us being involved on the types of jobs we’re working today, 15 years ago,” Ferlin said. “We are excited to see the legacy continue for our company.”

As for the company’s culture, Ferlin plans on keeping a family mentality at the core.

“I think in our current society, some-times family might be overlooked. Family is very important to me and has always been,” he said. “We always try to treat our company and employees like family, and I don’t see that changing in the future.”

Introducing Autocar® Trucks – Purpose-Built from the Ground Up

Toronto, Ontario (February 25, 2021) – Wajax is now a Canadian distributor of Autocar® Truck parts and now provides service on Autocar® Truck products in select locations across Canada including Toronto, Sudbury, Ottawa and Dorval. Wajax’s distribution centre located in Toronto is the hub for Autocar® Truck parts distribution across Canada.

Autocar® Trucks are severe-duty, purpose-built vehicles that can be used for a variety of applications from refuse and recycling to construction and concrete. Autocar®, founded in 1897, created the first “engine-under-the-seat” delivery wagon in 1899, which was a precursor to the Cab-Over-Engine design used currently. Presently, Autocar® Trucks are custom engineered to the customer’s application; there are no generic stock trucks, and no chopping, welding, slicing and dicing in an aftermarket mod-shop is done. The wiring, frame, and body controls are all assembled on the factory production line and tailored to the specific application or vocation.

Autocar® Refuse Trucks are the primary product line Wajax will be supporting with parts and service. These vehicles have been designed from the wheels up to maximize safety, productivity, and efficiency. The Autocar® Truck Cab-Over-Engine design with 325° driver visibility and exceptional maneuverability, including the industry’s tightest turning radius, leads to less backing up and potentially fewer collisions. Autocar®’s all-steel cabs and wrap-around bumpers help to enhance safety while durable, lightweight frames allow for long route capabilities. Extra details like fluid service points on the curb side, along with spacious cabs, make Autocar® a leader in manufacturing some of the most reliable and safest vocational trucks on the road.

Wajax is proud to offer Autocar® Truck parts and services in various locations across Canada. The central distribution centre in Toronto, Ontario is well stocked with essential parts and able to expedite shipping throughout Canada. Autocar® provides 24/7 Direct Factory Support for new truck purchases for the life of the truck. Wajax and Autocar® have a longstanding history of industry expertise within their respective regions. As a national On-Highway provider and an Allison distributer, Wajax has the operational capabilities in place to integrate Autocar® Truck parts and services seamlessly into its operations.

“The Autocar® and Wajax partnership is a great fit to expand our offerings and support our customers in the On-Highway market,” said Joe Di Pede, Vice President, Powertrain.

Wajax service centres and technicians are well versed in On-Highway service and maintenance requirements. With diligent training, technical knowledge and a vast branch network, Wajax offers its customers end-to-end product support. Wajax welcomes the Autocar® Truck brand to its Canada-wide network. The Autocar® Truck brand complements Wajax’s present parts and service offering and gives Wajax the ability to better serve its customers from coast to coast.

“We are pleased Wajax chose to partner with Autocar® for Canada. We believe in long lasting powerful brands and a legacy of taking in tough sectors  to deliver results for our customers. Wajax has invested in the facilities, warehouse, and both quantity and quality of components to serve customers.  Autocar® Trucks is proud to collaborate with Wajax to serve Canada,” Jim Johnston, President, Autocar® Trucks.

Autocar® Trucks offers industry leading Power of One™ integration. Autocar® partners with body manufacturers for parallel engineering of refuse bodies to pre-engineer chassis layout and components to enable a seamless body integration onto the Autocar® chassis, delivering one of the highest level of integration in the industry. This ensures a complete tool is delivered to the customer in OEM quality condition, minimizing customer downtime and contributing to a high level of uptime.
